40! - by Charlene
Well it’s been nearly a week and I am now officially 40 - hard to believe, I know. I had thought that moving across the ocean from my place of birth might somehow negate my birthday but it just ended my 30s 8 hours sooner than it would have at home. While I did miss the traditional turning 40 birthday party with our dear Winnipeg friends, we managed to celebrate on our own. My family planned a great day for me that began with fresh peach crepes with whipping cream, we took an afternoon safari in Kruger Park and then had a fantastic dinner at home later that day. On Wednesday we had a prawn braai with some friends and Friday night John and I went out together while the girls were at a sleepover. I feel very well-celebrated at this point. With the average life expectancy at birth in South Africa being around the mid-thirties due to the HIV/AIDS crisis, growing old is not something to complain about but celebrate!

Are you kidding me? I have a cousin AND a wife who are 40? This isn't right...
You have another cousin who's AT LEAST 40 but somehow feels 30. Happy belated birthday, Charlene. You are very welcome to join our 40+ club. We celebrate with you.
Andrea
hey pretty soon you 40+ will all join the elite ranks of the 50+ - its just great up here :) glad you had a great day - Shari
Happy Belated Birthday Charlene! Sounds like you had a memorable day.
We hope your transition to Zambia goes smoothly and that your new work keeps you busy. My parents did their MCC stint in Zambia and my brother was born in Lusaka. I'm sure much has changed since then. Or not.
All the best,
Brian (and Verena)
Hey!!
Nice pics!!
This is the first time I've seen them! Your girls are growing up fast! Danica is looking more and more like you, Charlene.
Happy 40! And welcome the this elite club that I joined earlier in the year (June). It apparently comes with its privileges, of which I haven't found any of them, yet.
You've done a great job of your blog. For that I thank you...I get to see your family!
When I was in the Congo two years ago, they all thought that I was 10 years younger than I really was.
This was because the women there that were the same age as me looked 10 years older than me. They have been through so much physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Keep doing what God has planned for you!
You guys all look great!
By the way, having Thanksgiving outside in Canada is actually not as crazy as you may think...here it BC, it can be a conceivable notion! Just thought I'd let you know.
God bless you and yours,
Love & prayers,

Hey there Charlene,
Isn't it funny how the clocks keep ticking - even on the other side of the world. Hope things are settling a bit for all of you, now that you have plans for January. Fort Garry Mission committee is thinking of you and your family , specifically at this time of year. We are excited for all you have been able to do in Africa but still miss you and John back here in Winnipeg!
I turn 40 in the New Year as well, a troubling concept.
